This Week in the Universe #3

Times in WWE are.....interesting to say the least. Last weeks Raw was pretty awful and this past Sunday's Smackdown exclusive show Money in the Bank had some controversial decisions. Could both shows recover from these set backs?

Wow! What a huge improvement this weeks Raw was! 3 great segments and some decent in-ring action made for a much better show from Raw this week. My personal highlight for the week was the return of 'The Monster Among Men' Braun Strowman who has been sorely missed over the past few months. During a really good Roman Reigns & Samoa Joe match an Ambulance showed up backstage and Strowman emerged from the back to a huge ovation. The distraction was enough for Joe lock in the coquina clutch to make Reigns pass out. Strowman made his way out after the match to beat down Reigns. He declared that he wasn't finished with Reigns and challenged him to an Ambulance Match at Great Balls of Fire. That should be savage! My second favourite segment from Raw this week was the closing segment of the show where it was revealed that the mystery attacker of Enzo Amore was......BIG CASS! My goodness I am thrilled they actually went through with it. Even though Enzo & Cass weren't really going anywhere they were still a hot favourite with the crowd. The turn was done so expertly though, I was impressed with the heel promo from Cass and the acting from Enzo shedding a tear was next level stuff! Finally the other great segment from Raw which originally had no business being great was The Miz attempted apology to Maryse. There was more bear action that was interrupted by Dean Ambrose who ended up being beaten down by the bears who turned out to be Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel! Although it is a shame that it seems Miz and Maryse are being broken up I am all on board with The Miz having Bo and Axel be in an entourage faction. Also Bo's beard and hair combo. God damn! I also really enjoyed the stuff between Finn Balor and Elias Samson. Although it isn't ideally the feud we want Balor involved in, this feud can be good for both men. Samson will be instantly made to look like a bigger deal feuding with Balor and Balor will benefit from inevitably getting the win WHICH HE SHOULD! The tag matches with The Hardy Boyz/The Club and Sheamus & Cesaro/Apollo Crews & Titus O'Neil were both fine but just felt a bit pointless. The Hardys and Shesaro are in a feud right now so it was obvious they would win, so the losing teams benefited nothing from it. Titus O'Neil was entertaining in his segments with Apollo and Akira Tozawa who at least for now is all in on the Titus Brand. The women's segment was really uninspiring. It was nice to see Bayley back and finally showing some fire after the pitiful display at Extreme Rules. I really hope we don't get another multi-woman tag match on a PPV.

Smackdown Live was an interesting show following Money in the Bank and the big story coming out of the show was the return of GM Daniel Bryan and his decision regarding the Women's MITB ladder match controversy. First of all the promo at the start of the show with Carmella and James Ellsworth was really good. Carmella has been decent on the mic as a heel and this was her best work one to date. The stuff with the MITB competitors coming up to Bryan during the show did get tedious but the one with Becky Lynch was particularly good. And then it came to decision time and Bryan dropped the bombshell that he was taking the briefcase away from Carmella and announcing that we would have another MITB ladder match next week on Smackdown. Should be awesome! Also from the women which was a bit strange Lana just asked for a rematch for the Womens title and was granted one for next week. I guess Naomi is being booked to be a fighting champion so that part makes sense. Dolph Ziggler Vs Shinsuke Nakamura was easily the match of the night and was much better than their match at Backlash. Well worth watching! The US Title Open challenge with Kevin Owens returned and was intially answered by AJ Styles. Owens backed up by saying he was only facing people from Dayton which brought out American Alpha and Chad Gable announced that he moved to Dayton that morning. Owens and Gable had a fun short match which Owens won but it was nice to see a fresh match up. Another fresh match up was the main event between WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and Luke Harper which was a decent match. After the match Randy Orton came down and just destroyed The Singh Brothers and then RKOd Jinder which is always fun to see. They announced a couple more matches for next weeks show which is Baron Corbin Vs Sami Zayn and The Usos Vs The Hype Bros in a non-title match but if The Hype Bros win they get a title shot. Should be a really good show next week!

WWE 205 Live was an entertaining show from the cruiserweights but suffered from its long standing problem of disinterest from the crowd. In the opening match Tony Nese defeated Jack Gallagher after faking an injury to get advantage. Gallagher is always fun to watch and the crowd was at least into his shtick. Mustafa Ali and Drew Gulak had an entertaining match with Gulak using an aggressive ground attack while Ali was trying to fly around the ring. In the end Ali got the better of Gulak by using his ground game against him by winning with a roll-up. The main event was WWE Cruiserweight champion Neville and Rich Swann battling in a great physical athletic match. These guys have wrestled a few times before but they both seem to have great chemistry and pretty much always have great matches. Neville won making Swann tap out to the Rings of Saturn and after the match Neville was staring down Akira Tozawa who was at ringside during the match. I'm looking forward to seeing Neville Vs Tozawa!

WWE NXT TV shows can be a bit of a drag at times but at the moment they really seem to be hitting their stride with the strong improving roster they have at the moment. Ember Moon returned and defeated old rival Peyton Royce and even got some shots in on Billy Kay in the process. It was great to see Moon back she is fantastic. Eric Young & Alexander Wolfe beat The Ealy Brothers continuing to make SAnitY look strong. Sonya Deville destroyed Rachel Evers looking like an absolute badass. I see good things in her future. Bobby Roode and Roderick Strong got into an intense brawl and it was announced that Roode and Strong will battle for the NXT title on July 5th. Noice! The Main Event pitted Kassius Ohno against Aleister Black and no surprise they had an absolute slobber knocker of a match. Although there was a hand shake at the start of the match both guys beat the hell out of each other with strong hard shots. In the end Black won the match pinning Ohno after a brutal Black Mass.

And that was this week in the WWE! Raw was definitely a much better show this week and next week I'm really interested to see how the best stories from this week develop and of course the return of the Universal Champion Brock Lesnar. Smackdown Live dealt with the fallout of Money in the Bank well and next weeks show should be really good with a stacked card already announced. 205 Live was an entertaining show and I'm really looking forward to seeing Neville and Tozawa lock up. NXT is really hitting a strong stride right now and next week should be great with Asuka and Nikki Cross battling in a Last Womans Standing match. What did you guys think of WWE this week?
